History of the Way to Santiago in Liendo

The Valley of Liendo is one of the of the villages along the Santiago road, not surprisingly there is evidence of the existence of an hospital (Hospital de Lazaro) for pilgrims in the valley. This hospitals was staffed by monks belonging to the Order of San Lázaro.

It is believed that it was located next to next to the Chapel of San Roque, now restored and framed in a beautiful spot in the shade of oak trees, in the same neighborhood of Liendo at which our Posada is located.

There are few published references about this chapel, but we can see that it was talked about as early as 1633. It is said that there are other shrines dedicated to this saint all the way along the coast of France to Santiago de Compostela.
